Europastry is the leading company in the frozen bakery dough sector. For 30 years, it has been offering its products in more than 80 countries through its 22 factories and 27 sales offices.
The electricity bill represents a high cost for this type of industry, and rising electricity prices create new challenges. At the same time, volatility in electricity markets and regulatory changes to allow consumer participation in flexibility markets create new opportunities. However, the, Europastry does not know how to operate in electricity markets, nor does it know the potential of its flexibility.
Bamboo Energy integrates the coolers at the Vallmoll plant with its platform to measure electricity consumption and collect critical information about Europastry's process, without the need to install a new hardware.
Bamboo Energy validates the solution by simulating the Europastry plant's participation in flexibility markets. The results show that it would be possible to lower electricity consumption by up to 500 kW for 2 hours without affecting the stored product.
Bamboo Energy evaluates the potential business model for Europastry's participation in flexibility markets. The flexibility of the Valmoll plant could generate between 50 and 120 k€/year depending on the evolution of electricity prices. At the same time, their participation in flexibility markets would also entail a reduction of approximately 130 tCO2/year, improving Europastry's environmental impact and corporate image.
With this pilot, Europastry has gained experience in implementing an innovative business model and is ready for a larger scale roll-out. At the same time, BambooEnergy has gained experience in the logistics and refrigeration sector.
Europastry wants to act as an independent aggregator in the future using BambooEnergy's technology, benefiting from the regulatory change in Spain that will allow independent aggregators to participate in flexibility markets (from the end of 2022).
